Zero waste fashion: the Eco-Chic Design Award 2013

One of the most exciting projects we’ve been involved with this year is the Eco-Chic Design Award – a design competition challenging emerging fashion designers to create mainstream clothing with minimal textile waste.

The countdown to Award grand final at Hong Kong Fashion week next year began a few weeks ago, as the eight finalists were announced. They are now hard at work to create minimal waste collections to compete for the winning spot.

We are honoured to be one of the proud partners of this brilliant event for 2013, and as such we have had the opportunity to see the designs that got these eight promising designers in for a spot in the final:

Alex LAW 羅錦安 – Hong Kong
Xinyin DAI 戴歆彦 – China (mainland)
Tsung Chin CHIANG 姜宗瑾 – Taiwan
Phee NG, Swee Yee – Singapore
Catherine Hudson – UK
Louise de Testa – France
Karen Jessen – Germany
Clémentine Sandner – wildcard

The winner will get to design a sustainable collection for Esprit for global retail, a cash prize, and will also receive a one year subscription to The Berg Fashion Library as well as one year subscriptions to the Fashion Theory and Fashion Practice journals from us.

We have also given the 8 finalists free 3-month access to the Library to help with their research, and provided all semi-finalists with a copy of the much-awaited Practical Guide to Sustainable Fashion.

But enough of us. Feast your eyes on the absolutely brilliant designs that they have come up with so far, and if you think you are up to the challenge, why not sign-up next year?
