The College for Creative Studies (CCS) program is one of only a handful in the United States, teaching students the design and manufacture of products such as footwear, handbags, leather goods and accessories. It combines creativity with strong focuses on manufacturing, trend forecasting, merchandising and market research to give graduates a thorough overview of the industry.
“Fashion accessories represents billions in revenue annually and is a segment that continues to grow, yet there are few institutions in the U.S. preparing the next generations of accessories designers,” said Aki Choklat. “CCS is one of few schools taking notice, and with their rich history and excellence in product design and crafts disciplines, as well as strong industry partnerships, it’s a wonderful place to give young fashion accessories designers the platform they need for future success.” (From the CCS press release)
CCS welcomes Choklat’s wealth of experience, from designing for top international fashion labels such as London-based menswear Diverso, to brand consulting, to directing his own label of shoes, handbags and accessories. He also has experience in education, having taught at the London College of Fashion and De Montfort University, and helped establish the footwear and accessories masters program at Ferruccio Ferragamo lead Polimoda.
“We’re delighted to welcome a designer of such stature and accomplishment to the CCS faculty,” said Richard L. Rogers, president of the College. “We’re confident that combining his leadership with the College’s resources and the creative energy of Detroit, Aki Choklat will develop the premier accessories design program in the U.S.” (From the CCS press release)
Aki will work with an impressive program advisory council, which includes Ashley Olsen and Francesa Amfitheatrof of Tiffany & Co.
“I am very much looking forward to establishing a course that takes full advantage of the incredible inspirational environment at the College for Creative Studies and the city of Detroit. From the moment I first visited, I felt that there is a special energy and character that I have not experienced anywhere. We have all the right ingredients which can make this a top program in the world.” Aki Choklat
